Centered around Wager Bay, a 100-km-long arm of the sea extending off Roes
Wellcome Sound, Ukkusiksalik preserves a nearly pristine sub-arctic
environment. Definitely one of the most amazing places on Earth.
With their abundant plant and animal life, the barren-grounds are far from
accurately named. Although the land is unforgiving of human error, it
rewards the patient observer with an endless display of wonders found
nowhere else in the world. The barren-grounds are now under huge pressure
from mineral exploration and resource development.
The Great Sand Hills of southwestern Saskatchewan survive quietly as an island of biodiversity in a sea of agricultural uniformity. However, increased pressure to develop the natural gas resources beneath them threatens to upset the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem. Local photographer Branimir Gjetvaj hired Rebecca Grambo to write the text for a NEW BOOK on the area. All but one of these photos were taken during a 4-day research visit in July. |
